Beskrivelse

The chimpanzee is the animal in nature that most closely resembles humans. They live in groups and guard territories, which they defend against other groups. When forests are converted to farmland, the chimpanzees' habitats disappear and the species has therefore become endangered.

In the wild, apes eat termites, which they collect from termite mounds using blades of grass. They also like to eat fruit, seeds, nuts, flowers and various leaves.

In the wild, chimpanzees live about 40–50 years, while in zoos they typically live up to 60 years.

An adult male weighs between 43 and 60 kg, while a female weighs 33–47 kg.

The chimpanzee is pregnant for 8 months and gives birth to only one offspring at a time.

The chimpanzee's hands and fingers are very similar to a human's. The thumb is opposable, it has nails instead of claws, and its fine motor skills are just as good as a human's. The chimpanzee can walk on its hind legs and pick fruit from trees with its hands, and it can pick up even the smallest things with the "pincer grip" between thumb and forefinger. Hands are also used when infants and other apes in the group need grooming. When two apes greet each other, they reach out and touch hands.

All art prints in the zoo series are also available in A3
