A nisse is a Scandinavian phenomenon, known from Nordic folk tales and fairy tales. In Sweden they are called tomter, but the name ‘Nissen’ comes from the Danish names Nis or Niels. In the past, the nisse on the farm was called little Niels, Niels Gårdbo or simply Gårdbo or Gårdbukken. There are also other types of nisser besides farm nisser, e.g. forest nisser, church nisser, ship nisser and setter nisser. Today farm nisser are the primary symbol of Christmas and the ones we most often portray on Christmas cards, in julepynt and more.
